Adele and I went to a Christmas party and did not know what to bring.... but a moment of inspiration blessed us and Snow People cupcakes were born. Of course making 36 of them was over the top - I highly suggest keeping them to a tribe of 12. And yes, they were the comical hit of the evening and the oreo cookie, Hersey kiss & cherry mice pushed the plates over the top. Merry Christmas everyone!

Suzanne Kasler's New Look for Fall 2010

The fall High Point was a delight this year.... the excited energy from the buyers reacting to fantastic new product lines from designers carried the market. Hickory Chair relocated to a wonderful new spot and Suzanne Kasler's new line made me smile. The pieces she introduced were perfect in my opinion, and the older items were given a new life with new paint techniques and colors. The hottest color this market was gray in all of its adaptable & amazing shades.

This is the new Simone Bed in a King size. I love this frame. In other picture's I'll point out some great details.

These are the Simone Twin Beds with a wooden headboard. The East Paces Side Table is shown at the foot of the bed in white with gold detail. The Prado bookcase is on the left and the Ansley Chairs at the foot of the bed look awesome in their new 'word' upholstery.

This is a close up of foot of the Simone Bed. Nice carved details and look. What I did not show is the headboard option - to have the ends smooth like the below picture or to have a carved finial.

The curved top Marais benches are on the right. The chair to the left of the Montpelier cocktail table is the Madeleine Slipper chair and the sofa is the Celine Skirted.

The bedside table is the Augusta Chest with an artisan painted finish that was great looking!

I love this shot. The bed is the Candler King (we've all seen it is baby blue and linens etc) but this sophisticated and modern look shows how well this bed can change. Also, the Prado bookcase on the right has a new option - so very smart - the shelf the computer is on has been double in depth so it is now a desk!

I love Suzanne's use of city maps in the huge wall spaces.

This is the Julien Desk... the finish is rich and handsome. The desk chair is the Hunt.

These are the Virginia Arm Chairs and the Virginia Ottoman. In the back are the new Fairmont Storage Columns and painted Tuxedo Cabinet.

The Dalton Library table has great shelves on the ends.

I love the Piedmont Square top dining table surrounded with the painted Belmont side chairs.

Brambles - Maine's Best Garden & Local Artist Store

In late October Adele and I went on a road trip across the river and into Maine to see some friends, favorite places and enjoy the gorgeous fall colors. Along the way we stopped by Brambles, owned by our longtime friend, Lisa DuHamel.

Lisa started Brambles 16 years ago and has not wavered from her day one focus... a top notch gardening gift shop combined with a great supply of bulbs & pots blended with a strong group of Maine artists. Oil botanical, ceramic garden fish, sheep acrylic paintings, Sneerboer hand forged tools from Holland, stone critters and much more can be found in her shop. Our Designer Showhouse Room

This summer we participated in the York, Maine Designer Show House.... and the location was on spectacular York Harbor. We chose a harbor view bedroom in the back of the 6,500 sq ft home, and it was a bit tough, as the ceilings were low and 1/2 of one wall was a closet. However, we had fun. The floor was in absolutely horrid condition and required 5 coats of base paint and the walls took 3.

My business partner and mother Jane Derby, was the primary designer and I acted as the assistant and sounding board for several months as we drove some 1000+ miles searching for the right pieces to make the room come together and pop. Of course the room under went 2 or 3 total drawing board transformations before we keyed in on what made us smile. We wanted the room to be soft and relaxing - a comfortable place to read or nap.

The beds were our starting point... Thomas O'Brian had just released this bed during the Hickory Chair spring collection as a King and we loved it. But as it was too large, we re-drew it, scaled it, tweaked it and asked HC & him if he'd consider making it smaller for us... and volia, the proto types are below! And for that we owe Hickory Chair and Mr. O'Brian a huge thank you.

I love the painted floors - we wanted it to be a prime focus, but visually soft and sophisticated.

We took this antique chest of drawers and had it painted and finished with a faux bamboo pattern. The marble topped French pastry table features a faux bamboo iron frame the picks up on the chest.

I love my large store space in downtown Portsmouth but the economy has truly hit a number of small family owned stores up and down the seacoast this year and I got bumped too. At least I am able to try to reincarnate myself in a smaller more efficient location for a while. Cool Zebra Hide Rug

I just bought this awesome Zebra hide and I love it! Of course I knew that I would be digging a hole for myself and several clients have already expressed their disapproval of it even though it is a from a game preserve and is not poached. Regardless, hand painted cow hides can't hold a torch to this.

I had to come back and add this picture from a recently published design book. I respect the opinions voiced in the comment section, but good hides are never out of style. Just my opinion.

Italian Finial Decorations

I fell hard last year for these stunning reproduction 17th century style Italian finials... and now, so have my customers. The shapes are wonderful and the layers of gesso and silver/grey paint with gold flecks gives them a fantastic aged look - like old lead garden statues.

They look great on mantles too.

This pair of hand carved flowers aged the same way as the finals are a fun table accessories.

Another flower style...also, the decoupage plate in sepia tones is of actual Zuber & Cie wallpaper from a Marblehead mansion.

This year old line of stunning brushed steel cabinets and coffee table has been a huge hit with the Industrial & Retro crowd. Pearls, Pearls and more Pearls

Pearls, tons of beautiful freshwater pearl jewelry! My better half - Adele is the rep for a pearl manufacturing company and aside from wholesaling them to retail stores she decided we should sell them online too. Yep, I'm now in biz with my honey. So, we took some photo's, made a site and here the are.

Our site, Pearls by Fox specializes in Freshwater 8mm 60" strands of rope pearls, keshi, coin and stick pearls. We have necklace and bracelet and earring sets. Prices range from $80 to $165. Later this summer we will offer Akoya, Tahitian and South Sea pearls too! As a guy, jewelry has never interested me... but for some reason, I am falling for pearls. A Return to Blogging - as Blogging should be!

In a few months I will return to blogging, and the articles we are lining up will be awesome! No more constant product lists.... instead, J. Covington Home will be launched (July 1st).... our online store of 2,500 fabulous home furnishing items! It will be a cross between Horchow and Layla Grayce. Pillows, Lamps, Chandeliers, Swedish Furniture, Mirrored furniture, Wall Art, Antiques (snooze & lose), Beach, Camp & Cabin, Home Accessories, Gifts, and much more later on.... like bedding, cashmere throws etc.

This site will finally return to its interior design roots, how to's, behind the scenes and so much, much more. We are looking forward to seeing you often. And please, if there are tips and hints and other things you'd like to know about the interior design business, and home furnishing store world - please let us know. We'd love the opportunity to provide them to you. Don't be shy - let us know what you want to hear about.

Lastly, the other force you'll be hearing from is my mother (Jane Derby) and business partner. As designer of 30+ years, she has been featured in Better Homes and Gardens several times, Traditional Home, Accent Magazine and others. The Hunt for HUGE scale pieces - Part # 1

Recently I took a road trip hunting big pieces down for a few clients who like things with huge scale. These are a few of the things I found. The 1860 scrubbed oak hutch in the first picture was very sweet... one fine detail were the lion heads carved on the sides along with other scroll work.

There were a pair of these beauties!

I love the chicken wire panes. I've been seeing a lot of this in the last 12 months.

Just cool.

What a chandelier.

This arch is about 10 feet long!

A plenitude of treasure.

Loved the industrial stuff. There was a slew of it!
